About the College
History
The college was founded in 1975 after merging 6 different independent institutes.
These institutes became departments of the college, which was called the College of Engineering and Scientific Studies at that time. The college introduced undergraduate programs starting in 1983 and established the following departments.
The departments of Mathematics, Physics and Laboratories Technology separated from the college and became the College of Science, which has now evolved into colleges of science, medical laboratories science, computer science and information technology, as well as the Department of Art Education which became the basis for foundation of the College of Education.
Furthermore, the Department of Arts was transformed into the College of Fine and Applied Arts, and the Department of Business and Secretarial Studies, was transformed into the College of Business Studies.
In 1990, the Institute of Colleges of Technology was transformed into Sudan University of Science and Technology in its current state, and the Bachelor’s degree was transformed into a Bachelor of Engineering. The college expanded by adding new departments such as the Department of Petroleum Engineering, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of General Sciences, the Department of Timetables and Examinations. Then the college was called by its current name, the College of Engineering. In 2005, the leather and plastic engineering departments were added, which were administratively affiliated to the Department of Textile Engineering and Industries Technology. Finally, the university senate approved, in the March 2007 session, the chemical and nuclear engineering departments, bringing the number of academic departments to 13.
Bachelor's degree was introduced in all departments and postgraduate programs were introduced at the postgraduate diploma levels, Master's by coursework and supplementary research, Master's by coursework, Master's and PhD by research, and Ph.D. by coursework and research.
The Department of Architecture was upgraded into the College of Architecture and Planning and the Department of Textile Engineering was upgraded to the College of Engineering and Technology of Industries. Noting that the departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Surveying Engineering were upgraded into schools.
A complete development of the curricula took place, and the college adopted the modified semester system of study, which was replaced by the semester system defined by credit hours, and then currently the credit hour system. Finally, the Bachelor of Technology programs were introduced in some specializations, namely civil, mechanical, electrical, electronic and surveying engineering.
The College awards a Bachelor of Engineering degree with honors in ten semesters in one of the following majors.
Students distribution is made to sub-disciplines in engineering, based on both personal desire and academic performance.
